A source of unfrozen water can mean the difference of life or death to birds. All de-cers need a source of electricity to operate but can safely be use with an outdoor rated extension cord. Good de-icers have internal thermostats and turn on and off at about 35 degrees. Most are guarnteed to keep water open down to -20 degrees.
